“Again Isaiah says, ‘THERE SHALL COME FROM THE ROOT OF JESSE, AND HE WHO ARISES TO RULE OVER THE GENTILES, IN HIM SHALL THE GENTILES HOPE.'” Romans 15:12 (NASB)
How do we find genuine hope? We find it through Jesus Christ.
Jesus’ teachings give hope. Look at His many practical teachings that are recorded in the New Testament. From the Sermon on the Mount to His words at His ascension, Jesus gave His hearers hope for this life and the life to come.
Jesus’ example gives hope. Look at how He approached life with a spiritual optimism. He could endure suffering and ridicule. He faced death, aware of His Father’s purpose for Him (John 10:17-18), and committed His spirit to the Father’s care (Luke 23:46).
Jesus’ sacrifice gives hope. By solving our sin problem, Jesus removed the biggest negative influence in our lives. The old gospel song reminds us, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.” Those who have never committed themselves to the Christ of the cross could retitle that song, “My hope is built on nothing.”
Jesus’ resurrection gives hope. What is the most fearsome thing we can imagine? It is death. From our perspective it seems so final. But Jesus shows us that even death can be defeated.
Jesus’ promise gives hope. Think about the promise that He will prepare a place for us and return to take us home (John 14:2-3). It is a great comfort to know that Jesus is taking our eternal destiny personally. He is handling all the arrangements, and He will be in charge of our homecoming.
