The Future Is As Bright As The Promises Of God

Looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. Titus 2:13 (NASB)
I have been told by some that the doctrine of Christ’s Second Coming is outdated. These folk will go on to tell us that we should replace this worn-out belief with one of two options–we are on our own, so we must learn to rely on our own inner resources; on the other hand, some others would have us to believe, it is within our power to build the Kingdom of God on earth through successive and progressive steps. Psychological readjustment, social reorganization, socioeconomic engineering, global reformation, ecological transformation, a “new world order”–this, some suggest, is the sum and substance of the world’s ultimate salvation.
To deny the impending return of Christ is to flirt with disaster. Without a firm faith in Christ’s return, how can we ever hope to make sense of His promise to us: “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.” John 14:1-3 (NASB)
Early Christians expressed their belief in Christ’s personal return. And they associated His return with a definite period of great wickedness on earth. But they also rejoiced in the conviction that Christ’s return would mean the resurrection and transformation of their own bodies. Paul wrote to the believers in the city of Thessalonica; “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.” 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (NASB)
Was Paul merely pandering to wishful thinking, or was he reaffirming the promise of Christ Himself?
