In our better moments we acknowledge that we are guilty of sin and that we fail God. Much of the time, however, we may not be aware of personal sin. We look around us and see the failures of others, and we rejoice that we are not guilty of the things they do. This can be dangerous because it leads us to think that we are all right and our lives are pleasing to God. But when we feel most comfortable about our lives, we are farthest away from God. As we draw nearer to Him, and He to us, we are made ever more aware of our sin. When we stand in the very presence of God, we know we are sinners and cannot help ourselves. We can give nothing to God to atone for sin. It is impossible to live good enough to make up for even one of our failures. We can offer no sacrifice, no gift, that will bring us back into relation with God. Our only hope is to make confession of our sin and receive God’s forgiveness.
