“Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others too.”
Philippians 2:3-4 (NLT)
Open my eyes, Lord, to people around me,
Help me to see them as You do above;
Give me wisdom and strength to take action,
So others may see the depth of Your love.
A word of encouragement can make the difference between giving up or going on.
“The wise will inherit honor, but fools display dishonor.” Proverbs 3:35 (NASB)
Inheritance comes as a natural benefit of a family relationship. In the same way, to God’s children who look to Him for wisdom and depend on Him for whatever rewards or honor may come, recognition is assured. Consider, for example, Joseph in Egypt and Daniel in Babylon. From prison and captivity, and without self-promotion, each of them rose by God-given wisdom to heights of honor and power within a pagan society.
On the other hand, consider the example of Haman in the book of Esther. Constantly promoting himself and seeking to destroy faithful Mordecai, Haman ends up giving Mordecai the public honors that he had planned for himself (Esther 6:1-11). In the end Haman is hanged on a high gallows that he had built for Mordecai (Esther 7:1-10).
