The Perfect Bond Of Unity
“Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.” Colossians 3:14 (NASB)
Paul calls love “the perfect bond of unity”–not “unity.” “The perfect bond of unity” means that which holds together all the graces which constitute unity. Unity consist of many graces–each grace in its own place and relationship to Christian unity, but all are held together by “love.”
Love is the highest element of divine perfection: “God is love” (1 John 4:8). No grace is complete without love. Without the love of God, knowledge is worthless (1 Cor. 13:1-3). Knowledge without love and the fear of God is selfish and leads only to human pride and vanity of mind. Love is unselfish. God so loved that He willingly gave His only Son. Jesus the Son so loved that He willingly laid down His life, that sinners might be saved through faith in His finished work. Sin is selfish in all forms and varieties. Such selfishness must be conquered and put down before the love of God can have right-of-way in the heart. Jesus said, “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. . . and. . . you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
The greatest need in the true church today is an old-fashioned revival that will literally baptize believers in, and fill them with, the love of God. When we love God as we should, we will love the brethren.
