Power

“I am with you always, even unto the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20 (NKJV)
No great work for God is done by human might or power alone. Jesus sent His disciples on a mammoth worldwide task, but He said, “Without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). They were not to begin their task until they were “endued with power from on high” (Luke 24:49). On the Day of Pentecost, God’s Spirit came with that power and in one day three thousand repentant sinners came seeking forgiveness (Acts 2:41). The power of the Spirit won them, not the power of the apostles.
Someone has said, “We must pray as if everything depended on God, and work as if everything depended on us.” This is true, but we often fail to keep the complete picture in perspective. Many Christians are inclined to pray and do no more. It may seem like the way of faith to confess, “Lord, it is up to You. There is nothing we can do.” But there is something we can do with His guidance and with His power working in us. God would surely be pleased if we were to ask Him “to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (Ephesians 3:20).
In Ephesians 6:10-18 is the listing of the Christian’s armor. We need to put on each piece prayerfully. Especially do we need to pray that the Word of God will work mightily as the sword of the Spirit in our preaching, teaching, and personal evangelism.
