“Whatever He Says To You, Do It.”

“On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, ‘They have no wine.’. . .His mother said to the servants. ‘Whatever He says to you, do it’. . .Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the waterpots with water,’ So they filled them to the brim. . .When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom, and said to him, ‘Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.'” John 2:1-10 (NASB)
One challenge of living life as a follower of Christ is to surrender ourselves to Him as Lord in such a way that we respond to Him in obedience. It is the challenge to live life with a committed mind-set, to do whatever He tells us.
Sometimes followers of Christ, though called to be “the least” and “servant of all,” seem to get mixed up, if our actions are any kind of indicator. We seem to need an over-abundance of recognition and affirmation. More often than not we seem to want to be on center stage in the limelight. We would prefer to be the star of the show rather than relegated to playing a supporting role.
If the truth were to be known, some of us would much prefer to turn the water into wine ourselves than to fill the jars with water. We would prefer to perform the miracle than simply to share in the miracle. However, we Christians are called to share in Christ’s miraculous redemptive work rather than to be the miracle workers ourselves.
We need to discern that the implications of living out our belief in Christ have to do with His glory, not ours. And in our following Him, though it may mean that we receive little or no personal recognition, we are challenged to live in such a way that His glory is revealed.
